I remember when I was a freelance graphic designer and marketing consultant for small businesses. I had an external hard drive connected to my desktop computer with hundreds of data folders full of client projects and design files. This was a good 8+ years ago and every single project I had worked on from 2005 through 2012 was stored somewhere on that drive. I remember when I bought a 2 Terabyte drive, I thought I had hit the motherload of data storage.

But, you know what I didn’t consider for the first several years? I didn’t even think about backing up all those files until one day I had opened a file that was damaged. It was one of those arduous Photoshop files that I’m guessing took me several hours of work to build. I was devastated. I had to start over. I bet I even had a little meltdown inside my cozy little home office. Just a few days later I bought another external drive, with even more space and an automatic backup system. From then on, I had two copies of every file. If I left for more than a couple of days, I would disconnect the backup hard drive and store it in our safe.

I did this because it occurred to me how much information I could lose if those files were damaged.
After some time, I got a bit wiser and the introduction of cloud storage became an affordable and secure option. This was a no brainer for my small solopreneur marketing business.
Since those days there have emerged darker and more menacing ways to lose your data. My little business would have been difficult to run without my client files, but I can’t even imagine the devastation of a random attack on business with important personal data or a large scale breach that shuts down an operation for days or weeks.

I bring this topic up again, on the heels of the Pipeline security breach, as we see today where yet another large company fell victim to a cyber attack! The world’s largest meat processor was hit.

This is becoming a huge problem. Cyber security is no longer an “add-on” IT service. It is a necessity for any business of any size! Long gone are the days of a simple hard drive backup or a quick file save to the cloud.
